LIP AND SMILE Enhancement

Thin and aging lips are common concerns for many patients of the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery and there are actually many different options to improve the appearance of your lips and smile. The most common treatments involve the use of fillers, like collagen or fat. Other treatments soften lip wrinkles through Botox™, laser peels, dermabrasion, or chemical peels.  For patients desiring a more permanent change, Dr. Nichter and Dr. Horowitz offer surgical techniques to improve to lift, shorten, or thicken the lips.  Finally, the ultimate beautiful smile can be achieved with the addition of cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, and whitening lasers to improve the appearance of your teeth. (As plastic surgeons, we do not provide these dental services, but we do work closely with dentists and oral surgeons who are experienced and skilled with these techniques.)

FILLERS: These are materials which can selectively fill various parts of you lips creating more “pouting” or “Paris Lips” which enhances the white roll or outer edge of the lips.

SURGERY: Can create permanent improvements in the appearance of your lips. These procedures are usually brief with quick recovery although some swelling may persist for several weeks. The overall costs may be less than repeated collagen or fat injections. As with all surgery, some scars may be visible depending on the technique and placement of incisions.

WRINKLES: may occur around the upper lip and sometimes around the chin (the perioral area). Smoking sun damage, and aging can contribute to these changes. These areas do not respond to facelifts and need one of the treatments listed below to achieve an improvement

Lip Fillers

These are materials which can selectively fill various parts of you lips creating more “pouting” or “Paris Lips” which enhances the white roll or outer edge of the lips.

Collagen, made from bovine (cow) protein, is temporary lasting 2-4 months. It is simple and quick to use with excellent results for many patients. Collagen requires one and sometimes two skin tests 30 days prior to treatment to test for sensitivity or an allergic response.

Fat may be more permanent than collagen. It can give excellent results in most parts of the face but seems to be the least reliable in the lips. As with most “fillers,” more than one treatment is usually required.

Autologen is made from the patient’s own skin. It is your own collagen that seems to give a 70% correction after about 3 treatments over 2 or 3 months. It can be stored for one year.

Alloderm is cadaver dermis that is medically prepared for insertion as a filler. It is placed under the skin much like Gore-Tex or Softform but is not synthetic and it is replaced by the bodies’ own collagen over time

Dermalogen is an injectable human substance obtained from donor tissue and processed by a patented method to provide a product similar to dermis (the second layer of the skin). Dermalogen may require two to three treatments over a three-month period followed by less frequent treatments. This product provides another alternative to collagen injections.

Fat may be more permanent than collagen. It can give excellent results in most parts of the face but seems to be the least reliable in the lips. As with most “fillers,” more than one treatment is usually required.

Goretex is a synthetic implant that can be placed in the lips as strands or threads. Other sizes and shapes are available for use in other parts of the face such as the cheeks. It is relatively simple to place and is permanent. This may leave the lips feeling more firm than other methods.

Don’t overlook this incredible opportunity to create luscious plump lips naturally & affordably without lip injections.
